Why a journalist was sentenced to two years jail by a president

Yesterday a journalist and blogger was sentence to jail for two years and a fine, for
Reportedly insulting the Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in his broadcast,
as said by the bloggers advocate, Amine Sidhoum.

Amine told AFP that he would lodge an appeal against the prison sentenced, and the fine of 200, 000 dinars, ($1, 800). To the 42 year old blogger Mohamed Tamalt.

According to a source it was also gathered that Tamalt was a London based blogger, and was arrested during a visit to Algiers in June last month, “offending the president” of the Republic” and the countries constitutional bodies, under articles of the penal code, Amine said.

Tamalt has a website, and also shares his news on social media, where normally accuses the Algerian officials, member of their families, including the president. No quick official confirmation of the ruling.

According to the country’s constitution he was liable to fine, and not a jail term. Amine said.
