Ambode: No More Street Hawking, Buy From Hawkers Go To Jail

The Lagos state governor Akinwumi Ambode has recently strengthen the state enforcement agency, due to the Hawker who was knocked down by a truck of a soft drink company in Nigeria.

According to a source it was gathered that when the hawker sighted the Lagos state law enforcement agency, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), coming he thought they were coming for him due to the fact that he has been previously arrested, and has been fine #10, 000 by the agency, which he tried to run before he was instantly crushed to death by a fast moving truck.

The dead of the hawker led to the kayos in that area of Lagos, as some hoodlums in that area took as an advantage to start vandalizing the Lagos Metropolis buses driving through that area. It was also gathered that the hoodlums did not just vandalize the buses but they also
attacked the drivers and passengers in the buses, while some of the passengers lose their belongings like Phone, cash and others to the hoodlums. Some of the affected drivers are still taking treatment in the hospital.

The Managing Director of the Primero Transport Services also made complains on their loses, he said the attack on the buses has nothing to do with the boy who was hit by the truck,  as he said millions of naira will be spend to put the buses in place.

Source also said that the body of the dead boy has not yet been claim.

Governor Ambode immediately ordered full investigation into the incident. He later announced commencement of total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers, saying that the law banning their activities across Lagos metropolis would take its full course. He also sympathized with the deceased street hawker family that led to the destruction

The governor said: “The issue is we need to enforce our laws because we already have a law in respect of that and then there is a clause in it which says the buyer and the seller are both liable and that we are going to fine them either N90, 000 or a six month jail term”

“What we are doing on traffic is that we are introducing new strategies to eliminate traffic but Lagos being a cosmopolitan city, you cannot totally eliminate it but now this is the case, in the next few days, you will see on the street of Lagos signs that will be warning you that buyers and hawkers should be aware that there are consequences,” Ambode said. He said his administration had also concluded plans to roll out a massive campaign which would warn both motorists and hawkers of the restrictions and the penalty for defaulters.

“We will be watching out for buyers and sellers and all we need is just scapegoat. Don’t buy plantain chips or any other items in traffic from July 1, buyers beware”
